Communities & Artisanal & Small-Scale Mining
We are leading experts on Communities and Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM). Our team works with commodities trading and extractive companies as well as policy makers and multi-stakeholder initiatives along the natural resources value chain. We combine our global, practical research, community engagement and project delivery experience with in-depth knowledge of the environmental, human rights, political and social aspects of ASM solutions.
Our team of senior experts has been called to work on this work area in over 18+ countries in the past 10 years.
Business appropriate advisory
Our team of senior experts develops industry appropriate policies, strategies and management systems.
For companies, our team of senior experts makes sure artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) related risks are solved in a robust, business appropriate, cost-effective, good practice compliant and sustainable manner. Our interventions thus become a foundation from which companies can retain and promote their social and political licenses to operate.
For policy makers, our team of senior experts works with governments and development organisations to deliver effective research, policy and strategic solutions so to improve the development impact of ASM.
All of our work is aligned with international good practice standards, such as the IGF’s ASM Management Guidance for Governments, the ICMM Sustainable Development Principles, the IFC’s Sustainability Framework and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
Not all of our assignments with corporate clients come with specified terms of reference. We therefore work with our clients to define requirements and sought after outcomes. Once we have done so, we will propose a broad direction and process to follow to reach major milestones, along with a competent team to implement it. We take no shortcuts and will take the thorough route to arrive at solutions that are sustainable.

For policy makers, we offer:
For AngloGold Ashanti, RCS Global developed a corporate framework and technical implementation plan to guide the company’s ASM responses across the company’s global operations.
For AngloGold Ashanti, PanAust, Trafigura and other mining companies, RCS Global has carried out ASM baseline studies to help the companies understand the ASM situation they face. Our team has used this data to help the companies implement sustainability focussed responses.
For the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF), RCS Global designed a practical and comprehensive guidance on managing ASM, so to mitigate impacts and harness the sector’s development potential. The Guidance will be used as a basis for policy and decision-making by international donors and the members of the IGF, a coalition of 49 countries.
For the World Gold Council, RCS Global assessed state-sponsored gold buying programs around the world for their feasibility and effectiveness as a gold trade formalisation tool.
